Bass Lessons In the San Francisco Bay Area

Our lessons will be

  • Personalized

Every lesson will bring new problems and new solutions, specific to every student. My job every week is to listen to you play and teach you how to achieve the sound you wish to create, and how to enjoy the process of music making and problem solving.

  • Engaging

My goal as a teacher is to help my students learn the joy of bass playing. Due to this goal, I try my best to find music that my students want to study, and I love to recommend recordings and bassists for them to be inspired by!

  • Fulfilling

As a child, music was my very first healthy coping skill. It provided me with an escape from the stresses of life, and gave me a strong sense of purpose. Nothing brings me more joy than seeing my students succeed and feel proud of themselves.

Teaching Philosophy and Mission Statement

As a private double bass teacher in San Francisco Bay Area, I feel it is my responsibility to provide a strong foundation for students to grow and develop not just as musicians, but as a well-rounded person. My approach to teaching is one that I have learned from my teachers; this approach is one of compassion, attention to detail, and a love of music. The student will develop comfortability with the instrument, build strong technical foundations, and establish good practicing habits early so that they can succeed in their performing, no matter how far they decide to go in their musical life. Whether the student wishes to pursue a career in music, win a competition, win a placement in their local youth orchestra, or simply wants to play music while in school--they will be given every skill I have to help them succeed. All of these skills are tools they will be able to use for the rest of their lives, musician or not.

Learning a string instrument, let alone the bass, can be difficult. It takes a lot of time and effort, and not everything works for every student. I want to work with the student to provide the most ideal approach to help them succeed in their goals. I will teach the student that it is okay to make mistakes, but that it is important to work to correct them. There is no such thing as a perfect performance, but striving for excellence should be the goal of the students with which I work. No matter what level the student is, I will help them achieve their goals and work with them to become a better musician.

I will provide a supportive, compassionate environment with a strong focus on establishing good technique and musicality. This will include teaching the handling of the bass and bow in a way that relieves the student of tension, teaching strong and curved fingers in the left hand, and teaching using various methods in order to find the most ideal style of playing for each student.

FAQs

What is your rate?

Lessons are $80/hour. I have a limited number of sliding scale options available based on household income. I understand that the Bay Area is an expensive place to live and not everyone can afford music education, so I am willing to work with you on a case-by-case basis.

I am willing to travel up to 20 miles to meet with a student for a lesson, however farther than that I will charge $.15 per mile for gas round-trip.

Do you have an age restriction?

I prefer to work with students that are ages 10 and up. However, I may make an exception to this on a case-by-case basis.

What books or methods do you use?

As for music books, I tend to use the Vance method for beginner students. However, I also use method books and scale books by Bille, Sevcik, Hal Robinson, Scott Pingel, and many others. We will see what works best for each student, but if you are a beginner, having the George Vance books are what we will be using.

Where can I buy or rent an instrument?

I want my students to have the best possible experience with their musical journey. I understand that getting an instrument off of Amazon might be a cost effective alternative to renting or purchasing from an instrument shop, however I am adament that my students have an instrument that was professinally set-up by a shop. This will not only help the student have a better experience with the instrument (both musically and technically), but it helps support our musical ecosystem and the bass community as a whole. The instruments you will get will be more comfortable to play, easier to play, have better strings, and many shops have various rental benefits (rent-credit for purchase, string replacement, ability to fix problems free-of-cost, etc.).
